The Force is Strong in Colorado Springs as the Space Foundation Discovery Center Brings Apollo and Star Wars to Life

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 29, 2019) – The Space Foundation Discovery Center in Colorado Springs is reigniting the excitement of the Apollo 11 lunar landing and throwing in some Star Wars fun as well with a special Homeschool Day, May the Fourth Be With You celebration and Teacher Appreciation Open House.
The final Homeschool Day of the year is Wednesday, May 1, from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and is Moon- and Apollo- themed. Homeschool students will learn about the astronauts who first landed on the lunar surface. Activities run throughout the day and reservations are not required. Homeschool Days will return in the fall for the 2019/2020 school year.
May the Fourth, one of the most popular days of the year for Star Wars fans, falls on a Saturday this year and the Space Foundation Discovery Center is celebrating with a variety of activities and games celebrating the iconic film series. Visitors are encouraged to dress as their favorite character, and some will even be lucky enough to get a photo with characters from the franchise. “Make Your Own Lightsaber” workshops are included in regular admission and will be offered at 11:00 a.m. – noon and 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. on May 4th.
Teacher Appreciation Week is nationally recognized Monday, May 6, through Friday, May 10. As a nonprofit organization that aims to inspire future space leaders, the Space Foundation wishes to recognize the teachers and educators in the Pikes Peak Region who are also inspiring the next generation. The Space Foundation is hosting a Teacher Appreciation Open House on Tuesday, May 7, at 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., free to educators with a valid school I.D. This Teacher Appreciation Open House will also be Apollo themed and will include classroom demos, virtual reality, rover competitions in our Mars Robotics Laboratory and more. Educators are asked to RSVP no later than Friday, May 3, for the event, which is for adults 21 and over only. See details at https://www.discoverspace.org/events.
More Apollo themed events will be coming to the Discovery Center throughout the summer as the Countdown to Apollo program ramps up for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission.
